Monica Gattinger is Director of the Institute for Science, Society and Policy and Associate Professor at the School of Political Studies. Her research and engagement focus on North American energy policy and Canadian arts and cultural policy. What links the two is her interest in understanding and strengthening public policy and regulation in the context of fast-paced innovation and markets, fundamental social and value change, and lower public trust in government, industry, science and expertise.

Dr. Gattinger leads two major research projects. The first, Positive Energy, is a three-year research and engagement initiative (2015-2018) that uses the convening power of the university and solution-focused research to identify how to strengthen public confidence in energy decision-making in Canada. The second is a three-year study (2014-2017) researching and writing an organizational history of the Canada Council for the Arts. The resulting book, The Roots of Culture, The Power of Art: The First Sixty Years of the Canada Council for the Arts, will be published in conjunction with the Council's 60th anniversary in 2017 (see http://www.mqup.ca/roots-of-culture--the-power-of-art--the-products-9780773551633.php).

Monica is a member of the International Advisory Board for the Washington-based think tank the Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies, a member of Pollution Probe’s Energy Exchange and Energy Ambassadors Advisory Councils, a Country Analyst for the international PRIX Index on Political Risk and Oil Exports, a member of the Public Confidence External Review Committee for the 2017 Energy and Mines Ministers Conference, and a member of the Editorial Boards of the University of Ottawa Press and the journal Canadian Public Administration. In 2016, she received a Departmental Achievement Award from Natural Resources Canada for Outstanding Leadership on public confidence in energy and mining development.

She holds a Ph.D. in public policy from Carleton University.
